I’m not sure any of these problems are related to one another, but they all occurred at the same time. Finally, my system is running significantly slower lately. Also the log file for my back-up software (SecondCopy) showed no history prior to early this morning usually it shows many days activity. Somehow my entire restore history had been erased. In looking into how I could be sure I had gotten rid of this virus, I discovered that my system restore calendar, which usually shows available restore points, had mysteriously been reset so that no restore points were available in December, and no previous months were available at all. I use this external drive as a back-up location and for storage (mostly of video files), so I’m not totally down, but I really like the security of having the reliable back-up.Ĭoincidentally, during a routine Norton Antivirus scan this morning I found that I had been infected with a virus called ojan, and that Norton AV had deleted the virus. They sent me a link to the hot fix, I executed the fix, but the problem is still the same! I also tried uninstalling and reinstalling the Maxtor software, but that didn’t help either. I found out that XP has a problem with 1394-type drives, and I was referred to a Microsoft location for more information: en-us 885464 This link discusses the symptoms, which match mine extremely well, and the existence of a “hot fix” that is only available if you call Microsoft, which I did. I went to the Maxtor web site for help and referred to their FAQ. However, it continues to be visible in Device Manager (which says it is operating satisfactorily). After more than a year of totally satisfactory operation, suddenly my Maxtor 300 GB external hard drive disappeared from “My Computer” and can no longer be accessed.
